Kedapatan menyelewengkan dana pemerintah sebesar 325 milyar rupiah, Latief menerima sangsi kewajiban pengembalian utang tersebut. Berkisar setengah dari total pengembalian yang harus dilakukan, 170 milyar dari keseluruhan 325 Milyar, Latief melarikan diri ke luar negeri pada 2000. Sempat dicekal pihak imigrasi terkait kasusnya tersebut, pengusaha dengan banyak saham di berbagai perusahaan besar di Indonesia ini berhasil lolos dan dikabarkan lari ke Singapura.
